Sara Ru
Artist Statement:
I am a conversationalist.
In my recent painting series — Growth, Neon Love, Neon Love: Muted, and Neon Love: Renewed — I explore self-growth and the evolving experience of love. Using flowers and nature as recurring subjects, I represent emergence, resilience, and the brightness of love within the heart and spirit. The intricate yet straightforward forms of irises, lilies, gladiolus, and beach roses carry symbolic weight: hope, rebirth, strength of character, and self-love.
Color is central to my work. Bright, vivid palettes emphasize the enormity of the job of learning to love oneself and others, while the Neon Love: Muted series reflects the struggle of love under outside pressures. Across all my work, I aim to spark conversations—about mental health, the environment, human rights, and the universal process of growing through love.
No matter the medium—paint, ink, glass, or performance—my art is rooted in nature and guided by the belief that art can create change. It can raise questions, foster dialogue, and spark joy. I wrestle with the question: Can art solve problems? I believe it can be a starting point for healing, action, and transformation.
